Carillion Alawi awarded $316mn Sultan Qaboos Hospital contract
The infrastructure solutions company, Carillion Alawi, has won a OMR121.6mn (US$316m) contract for work on the Sultan Qaboos Hospital project in Oman.
Carillion Alawi is a 50:50 joint venture between the Zawawi family and UK-based Carillion plc.
The project will commence as soon as Oman’s Ministry of Health has finalised the contract, and will cover a 20-hectare area of land in Salalah.
The company will develop a seven-storey building with an initial capacity for 620 beds.

Carillion Alawi signed “a letter of award with the Oman Ministry of Health as the preferred bidder [for] the design and build of the new Sultan Qaboos Hospital” according to a statement on their website.
The development on the project will progress in two stages – the first being initial design and mobilisation activities.
The first stage will begin immediately, and will be funded by “the customer”. The second stage is expected to start in 2018 following the completion of the design.
The UK company, Carillion, said that the contract was “on similar terms to those for the Salalah award and, if it were to go ahead, would have an estimated value of $158m (OMR60.8m) to the JV”.
The contract is being procured through “lower risk” routes, which entails “seeking support from UK Export Finance to secure [funding] for customers”.
