10. Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center is a part of Advocate Health Care, a fully-integrated healthcare network. The hospital provides a variety of medical services using the latest technologies. It has been named a 100 Top Hospital by Truven Health Analytics and also won the 2020 System for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth.


9. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

Founded in 1890, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is a trailblazer in treating children with diseases with new therapies, as well as a space for paediatricians to train. It was ranked as 15th in children’s hospitals and schools of medicine by the National Institutes of Health.

The hospital has teamed up with Green Mountain Energy Sun Club, for its Edible Garden and Mindfulness Path, on the hospital’s third-floor terrace.

“Green Mountain Energy Sun Club is honoured to be part of this innovative project with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation to promote sustainability and education,” said Mark Parsons, Vice President and General Manager of Green Mountain Energy. “The addition of the Edible Garden and Mindfulness Path provides access to safe and sustainable spaces to practise improving personal health and the health of our planet.”


8. University of California, San Francisco Medical Center (UCSF Medical Center)

Founded in 1864, The UCSF School of Medicine has been repeatedly ranked as one the best medical schools and counts four Nobel laureates among its alumni. 

Faculty and staff are offered the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Training, where they learn to recognise bias and discrimination, talk about bias and discrimination openly and apply any tools in their teaching.


7. Great Ormond Street Hospital 

Child specialist hospital Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is based in London, England, and has some of the best technology and research in the country. Up to 600 children visit for life-changing services and treatment each day. 

GOSH is a part of the Sustainable Medicines Partnership and is committed to sustainable business practices, as one of the few UK Hospitals to declare a Climate Emergency.


6. Singapore General Hospital 

Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is a restructured hospital and not-for-profit institution, dedicated to innovative translational and clinical research. SGH prioritises supporting healthcare professionals in their service, education and research – the “three pillars” of SGH. The hospital aims to be the first net-zero carbon emission healthcare campus in Asia and has started with the Green Corridor, which has booths on one floor set up to explore green initiatives, as well as recycling and up-cycling bins for staff and patients. 


5. Rigshospitalet 

Rigshospitalet is the most highly specialised hospital in Denmark and prides itself on being an open and inclusive hospital, which promotes the wellbeing of its 12,000 staff.

The hospital has invested in sustainable innovation in its architecture, using wooden beams repurposed as structural wood components with steel inserts in buildings. 

4. Barts Health NHS Trust 

Barts Health is one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers, serving 2.5m patients. It specialises in heart and cancer services, with some of the most advanced healthcare equipment and devices. 

It has set up carbon reduction targets, from 2018 levels:

  • 67% reduction in CORE emissions (by 2032)
  • 50% reduction in energy and water emissions 
  • 75% reduction in emissions from business and patient transport 
  • 25% reduction in emissions from waste.

All of these have a 2030 deadline.

 

3. Johns Hopkins Hospital 

The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was ranked as number one in our ‘Top 10 Hospitals in the World’, as it is widely regarded as being one of the best hospitals in the world. It specialises in gynaecology, neurology and neurosurgery, and was the first hospital in the world to perform male-female sex reassignment surgery. 

LevelTen Energy, a US-based startup enables organisations to purchase renewable energy, recently announced it was working with the Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation in Baltimore to help the organisation tackle its carbon emissions. 

 

2. Cleveland Clinic 

Founded in 1921, Cleveland Clinic is one of the most respected hospitals in the USA. It has eight regional hospitals, 16 family health centres and a children's hospital for rehabilitation, which are all run on the principles of cooperation, compassion and innovation.

The hospital celebrated Earth Day by encouraging staff to make Earth-conscious choices.

“There are a variety of actions that any individual can take to benefit the environment and their health,” explained Ilyssa Gordon, Medical Director of Sustainability at Cleveland Clinic. “Some of these include eating a plant-forward diet, which is high in fruits and vegetables, as well as choosing to bike or walk to work and other activities when possible. Just simply getting out in nature can also be beneficial.”

 

1. Kaiser Permanente 

As one of America’s biggest nonprofit healthcare businesses, Kaiser Permanente is carbon neutral and is one of the largest users of renewable energy in the USA healthcare sector.

“One of the most effective ways to protect the health of the more than 68mn people in the communities we serve is by ensuring healthy environmental conditions,” said Bernard J. Tyson, then-Chairman and CEO. “By investing in renewable energy and becoming carbon neutral, Kaiser Permanente is helping to prevent climate-related illness for people worldwide.”
