In a bid to support the health of its customers, health insurance provider Aetna has reportedly met with Apple to see how its Apple Watch healthcare technology can support its 20+ million members.

Established in 1861, the company has been providing life insurance policies, and entered the health insurance business in 1899, but did not introduce major medical coverage until the 1950s.

Since this time, Aetna has developed its products and services through a number of mergers and acquisitions, of which its existing partnership with Apple has benefited Aetna’s 50,000 employees within the company’s wellness programme.

With plans to offer discounted Apple Watch technology to its customers, Aetna plans to increase the awareness of population health, encourage customers to adopt a healthier lifestyle and provide sufficient medication management through Apple’s technologies.

The partnership highlights Apple’s increased interest in developing new applications and technologies to support the growing healthcare market. Its interest has seen Apple surpass Fitbit within the fitness wearable market, linking with its iPhone mobile technologies.

The partnership will benefit both parties, where Aetna became the first insurance company to offer the Apple Watch to its employers last year. It is widely thought that they hope for similar success ad increased revenue growth through this move.
